High up on Pockley Moor is
this ancient stone pillar (marked on the OS Map as "Locking Stone").
Carved into its sides are what appear to be place names (e.g. "Helmsley"?).
Presumably this standing stone was some sort of route marker. The square
cap in the photo was a piece of turf (placed there by a game keeper?). Answers on a postcard, please, as to just what the Locking STone happens to be. |
