Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern
Area)
This is a walk for all seasons, but is best enjoyed on a clear day
with plenty of sunshine.
There are some superb coastal views to be enjoyed, and you are never
all that far from the sound of the sea.
The Northern section of this walk passes through some delightful woodland.
Navigation is vrey straightforward, and although there are some ascents
and descents they are mostly helped by the stone steps cut into the
Cleveland Way footpath.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the Old Station at Cloughton Wyke (TA01130 94088).
Although the place can be quite busy, there is ample car parking in front
of the building.
Head Southwards along the railway walkway, until you come to a bridge
which passes over the road at Field Lane.
Descend by the steps to Field Lane and head North Eastwards to Cliff Top
House.
Just before the house, take the lane and footpath to Crook Ness, then
follow the Cleveland Way footpath Northwards for several miles, - passing
Hundale Point, Cloughton Wyke, and Rodger Trod.
The footpath descends into woodland (National Trust) South of Hayburn
Wyke,
The Cleveland Way footpath continues on your right. Instead, however,
cross a field at the exit of the woodland, and head for the Hayburn Wyke
Hotel.
Turn left along the road at the hotel until you come to the railway track
bed.
Now head Norhtwards along the railway track bed, past the old station
platform at Hayburn Wyke. After about 1/4 mile you come to a railway bridge,
UNDERNEATH of which is a footpath. Drop down onto this footpath and go
through a field gate.
Cross the field almost diagonally to find another field gate which leads
you into woodland.
Follow the bridleway in this woodland until you emerge on a farm road.
Follow this road to Whitehouse Farm and onwards to Plane Tree Cottages.
Just before the cottages there is a finger post indicating the footpath
wich returns you to the railway track bed.
Now head South and follow the railway track bed all the way back to Cloughton
Wyke Station.
