Explorer Map 304, - Darlington and Richmond
A delightful walk taking in countryside in the Tees Valley between
Whorlton and Winston, and using part of the Teesdale Way.
The route is very straightforward to navigate, and there are few
ascents or descents of any note.
Although the walk is suitable for any time of year, the scenery
in Summer time is at its best.
Although the actual walk is only just over 7 miles, we tried an
extension by walking up to Winston Green and then down through
the "Riverside Retreat" caravan park at Ovington. Unfortunately,
there is no access to the river bank from this pasrk (even though
the caravans are immediately above the "beach" beside
the river), so we had to retrace our steps.

installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start Point : The village green in Whorlton. (NZ10581
14884). Care needed not to park on the village green itself.
At the North End of the village turn right down a farm track that
heads almost due East to Low Barn Farm.
At Low Barn Farm, pass through a gate and follow the footpath at the
edge of a field towards Osmond Croft Farm.
Here the footpath is waymarked across a field to join the Teesdale
Way at Holme Wood.
Continue along the Teesdale Way to the holiday homes at Highcliffe
Waters, then continue along the road to High Cliff.
At High Cliff, take the footpath on your right that heads North East
across meadows to Winston.
As you head downhill on this footpath, there is an excellent view
of St. Andrew's Church, opposite.
Take the road into Winston, and make for St. Andrew's Church.
From the church there is a permissive footpath downhill to "Winston
Green", where a Millenium Stone is featured.
Take the footpath from here down to the river, then turn right on
the Teesdale Way to Winston Bridge.
Cross over the bridge and take the footpath to the "beach"
beside the river.
Return to the bridge and cross over once again.
Almost immediately, take the signposted Teesdale Way footpath to return
you to Whorlton.
Near Whorlton you have the option of returning directly (turn right)
by a lane to your start point, or a footpath (turn left) down to the
river.
This latter choice is well worth taking.
The riverside footpath takes you to a point above Whorlton Bridge,
where you return to Whorlton by the road.
