Explorer Map OL27 - North York Moors (Esatern Area)

A walk taken from the magazine "Country Walking".
This is a very straightforward walk, with no especial navigational problems or gradients.
It is especially enjoyable on a sunny day in good weather, as there are some superb coastal views to be enjoyed.
There is a steep descent down steps as you return to Sandsend, - where the footpath goes over the old railway tunnel.
Just before leaving Mulgrave Woods you have to cross the Barney Beck using a ford. This can be quite slippery and some care is needed.
The footpath through Mulgrave Woods is only permissable on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and is CLOSED in the month of May.
There is a car parking charge for the small car park used at the start of the walk, though at the time the walk was done there was nobody around to collect the car parking charge.

Start Point : Small car park at the entrance to Mulgrave Woods by the East Row Beck (NZ86142 12484).
Follow the broad Estate track in a West South Westerly direction for 1.5 miles until you come to Mulgrave Castle. The castle is reached by some steps on your right.
Enter the castle. When you leave it by the steps on the West side of the castle, take the footpath that heads along a ridge almost due West. Continue to the edge of the woods and take the gated footpath on your right.
Head North along the edge of the woods, and cross the Barney Beck by a ford. Past the ancient Mulgrave Castle, take the lane that heads North West to High Leas Farm.
Cross the road and continue along the lane towards East Barnby. Where you meet the minor road, turn right and walk uphill for a couple of hundred yards.
On your left is a field footpath that heads West over agricultural land. Leave the field over a stile, cross the lane, and continue West on Field footpaths to High Farm, Bog House Farm, and eventually the village of Mickleby.
(It very much helps to use the 1:25,000 map in order to identify field boundaries).
In Mickleby, turn right at the road junction and follow the road to the B1266 road. Turn right, then cross the main A174 road.
The footpath here initially crosses a corner of a field, then cuts across a fence line to meet a broad track. Follow the track Northwards for a hundred yards or so, when you come to a waymarked footpath that follows the fence line.
The footpath takes you to Westfields Far. Here, follow the waymarks to take the path North Eastwards to the disused railway track.
Follow the railway track bed Northwards and North Eastwards until you come to where the Cleveland Way footpath passes the track bed.
Now take the Cleveland Way footpath to Kettleness and back to Sandsend.
