10.4 miles.
Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A walk that starts and finishes in Saltburn.
The outward leg of the walk is through the Saltburn Valley Gardens,
following the Skelton Beck. The route then follows the Cleveland Way
footpath to Slapewath.
From here the route switches to the Cleveland Street footpath to North
Skelton, and eventually returns alongside the Saltburn Gill to Saltburn.
There is a steep descent down into Slapewath, and a couple of smaller
ascents / descents into small valleys in which the becks flow.
Apart from these minor difficulties, and some very muddy paths when
the weather is wet, the route is very straightfoward.
The walk can be shortened by about 4 miles by taking the track from
Skelton Green to North Skelton.

Start from the car park in Saltburn by the Saltburn
Valley Gardens (NZ66814 21529).
Head up the valley beside the Skelton Beck, crossing the beck so that
it is on your left as you head up the valley.
Continue walking up the valley until you come tyo the railway viaduct
that crossed the Skelton Beck.
At this point the path turns sharp left through woods, then continues
towards Skelton.
Follow the clear footpath signs for the Cleveland Way into Skelton
itself.
Cross the main road and continue on the Cleveland Way footpath, -
climbing up the bank via a series of steps.
At the top of the bank, follow the Cleveland Way footpath to Skelton
Green, then continue all the way to Slapewath.
At the quarry in Slapewath, turn left and just past the "Fox
and Hounds" continue on the Cleveland Street footpath.
This footpath is the one to the left of a gated entry to a cycle way
that follows an old railway track bed.
Follow the Cleveland Street footpath to North Skelton.
In North Skelton, continue on the road under the railway bridge. After
about 200 yards take the footpath on your left that heads North North
West.
When you come to the corner of a field where a farm track enters,
DO NOT turn right to follow the field boundary.
Instead walk along the farm track for about twenty yards, then cross
over some rough ground on your right. You will then see a clear footpath
that runs to Brotton.
Follow this footpath, crossing the busy A174, into a dene and continue
towards Brotton.
Just before you reach Brotton, where there is a footpath waymark indicating
to go straight ahead, turn left and follow a farm track beside a field
boundary for a hundred yards or so. Then turn right to join the footpath
that heads North West to Saltburn.
When you reach the Saltburn Gill Nature Reserve, keep the Saltburn
Gill on your left as you take the path back to Saltburn.
