Explorer Map OL31, - North Pennines, - Teesdale & Weardale
This is a walk for anyone, at any time of the year.
The route is very easy to follow, and is almost entirely on the
level. There may be one or two muddy patches, and there are some
steep steps to climb near High Force.
Otherwise, this is a great walk which enables you to enjoy some
superb scenery beside the River Tees, and take in two of the most
scenic waterfalls in the country.
Start Point : MIddleton-in-Teesdale. There is a parking
area near the well-known drinking fountain statue (NY94744 25406).
Head down the road to the bridge that crosses the River Tees.
Once over the bridge, go past the livestock auction sheds and take
the footpath that is signposted "Pennine Way".
Follow this clear footpath on the South bank of the River Tees to
Low Force.
Continue on the South bank to the footbridge over the River Tees below
High Force.
Cross this footbridge, turn left and take the footpath towards High
Force.
Where this footpath enters woodland, there are some steep steps which
take you up to the road and the High Force Hotel.
Pay your entrance money for High Force at the Gift Shop, then take
the path through the Raby Estate land to view High Force itself.
Retrace your steps to return to MIddleton-in-Teesdale.
