Explorer Map OL26 - North York Moors Western Area
A walk that starts in the peaceful village of Kildale, and climbs
up to Captain Cook's Monument via the Cleveland Way.
The route descends into Great Ayton from the monument by a very
steep path, which in wet weather is also slippery.
Great care is needed on this path.
Great Ayton was, of course, Captain Cook's "home town"
and the village is well worth wandering through.
From Great Ayton, field footpaths take you to first Easby and
then Battersby village. The return to Kildale is along field footpaths.
Although there is only one steep, and tricky, descent, the field
footpaths can be very muddy in wet weather.
Otherwise, this is a delightful ramble through countryside that
is almost literally on the doorstep of industrial Teesside.
