Explorer Map No OL27, - North York Moors Eastern Area

This is a walk that ir probably best done when the weather is reasonable and the visibility is good. There are some spectacular views between Roxby and Borrowby.
In winter time, or in wet weather, parts of the walk can be very muddy.
There are a couple of gradients to go up and down, though these are not especially challenging.
Possibly the most difficult part of the walk was in crossing a couple of becks between Dodder Carr Farm and Low Waupley Farm, where the footpath is not at all good and considerable care may be needed.
A 1:25000 map is recommended to help follow the footpath across the farmland.

Start from the Eastern car park at Scaling dam, where there is a toilet block and picnic tables (NZ75509 12871).
Follow the footpath round the southern side of the reservoir, which starts from this car park. Continue all the way round, to meet the track of Quarry Road which takes you to the A171 Moors Road.
Cross the road (CARE, traffic) and walk about 200 yards to the farm lane marked Dodder Carr Farm.
Continue to the farm, and cross a wall stile to take the path to a private house, where the footpath continues into some woods at the side of the house.
Cross a beck in these woods and continue to the Grinkle Park road, and then on via the footpath to Low Waupley Farm.
Just before Low Waupley, the footpath crosses the fence at a stile. This stile is not marked and you need to watch out for it.
Past Low Waupley you first cross some very rough grassland, and then turn sharp right at a marked stile to head Northwards to High Waupley Farm.
At High Waupley, you turn right past the farmhouse and then immediately turn left to follow the footpath Northwards.
After three fields, the footpath turns right at a gateway to take you to the Grinkle Park road.
Turn left, and walk to the entrance to Grinkle Park Farm.
Here, head Eastwards along the farm road, and then track, to cross the Easington Beck. Continue up the slope to reach the minor road of Ridge Lane.
Follow Ridge Lane Northwards until you come to the footpath to Roxby. Following this footpath is where a 1 : 25000 map is quite useful.
The footpath comes out near Roxby church.
Take the road Southwards out of Roxby until you come to a farm gate on your left where two footpaths are clearly signposted.
Take the footpath Esatwards to Borrowby.
In Borrowby, follow Moor Lane Southwards, and then continue along a track to the cottage before Stang How.
Here turn right to follow the track to the Roxby road.
From here, the Scaling Dam Reservoir is about one mile away, - either following the Roxby road or taking farm footpaths.
