Explorer Map OL26 - North York Moors (Western Area)
Part of this walk is in the North York Moors National Park, and
part uses farm footpaths that are outside the park.
The farm footpaths outside the North York Moors National Park
were, for the most part, poorly maintained and signed. For this
reason, it is essential to have a good 1 : 25000 map to hand,
in order to be able to follow the field boundaries.
More significantly, some of the footbridges and stiles were in
a VERY poor state of repair, and needed to be crossed with a very
sure foot.
Following wet weather, there was a great deal of mud in some parts.
At one farm, in particular, the water, mud and slurry was ankle
deep.
The walk is probably best made in dry, Summer weather. However,
providing you recognise the possible problems mentioned above,
it is fine for any time of the year.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from the church, Ingleby Greenhow (NZ58122 06269).
There are a few parking places beside the church.
Cross the Ingleby Beck near the church, and take the lane that heads
South Westwards to meet a minorroad. Here turn right, then letf at
the T-junction. Just past the right-hand bend in the road there is
a signposted footpath that takes you to Meynell Hall Farm.
At the farm, take the footpath that runs beside the Little Broughton
Beck, - at one point crossing the beck by a footbridge. The footbridge
is reached by some extremely hazardous steps.
Continue on the footpath to Bonnie Hill Farm and then onwards to Toft
Hill Farm to eventually erach a minor road.
Turn left on this minor road, and left again at the T-junction.
Now take the footpath that leads past Ingleby Manor to Bank Foot.
Continue on field footpaths to Battersby.
Cross the ford in Battersby, and take the field footpath on your left
that leads to Battersby Station. However, after passing under the
railway, instead of heading to Battersby Station take the field footpath
North Westwards and Northwards to Atkinson's Wood Farm.
From here take the field footpath to Easby, and continue along the
road once in Easby to meet the minor road between Great Ayton and
Kildale.
Now return to Ingleby Greenhow by the field footpaths that lead you
to Pilly Hall Farm, Fir Tree Farm, and Station Farm.
