Explorer Map OL26 - North York Moors (Western Area)
A great walk for just about any time of the year.
The walk starts the village of Danby and initially heads West
to the village of Castleton.
From here the route follows Wandels Lane towards St. Hilda's church
(where a visit may be paid) before contuing down Danby Dale to
Botton village.
Botton
village is a Camphill Trust Community and as such is a unique
place.
From Botton Village, the route returns to Danby via Danby Rigg,
with extensive views of Little Fryup Dale and Eskdale.
There is one significant ascent (up the Jack Sledge Road), which
is both steep and over rough and uneven ground.
On Danby Rigg there is some moorland walking, where the usual
precautions need to be taken.
All-in-all, though, this is a fairly straightforward walk which
is rewarded by some stupendous views on a fine day.

Park outside the village hall in Danby village (NZ70799
08608).
Almost opposite this car park is a signposted footpath which takes
you West to the Danby - Castleton road.
When you reach this road, continue along it in a Westwards direction
for a few hundred yards (CARE - traffic) before taking the footpath
to Danby Park woods.
When the footpath reaches Park Nook, there is a footpath that takes
you down to the road into Castleton.
Continue into Castleton. When you reach the main street, turn left
and then right when you reach Wandles Lane.
Head South down Wandels Lane until you reach the T-junction just near
St. Hilda's Church. Turn right here, and continue Westwards until
you come to a No-Through road sign.
At this point, take the minor road to West Green Farm and Plum Tree
Farm. Past this latter farm, continue Southwards on the track to Blackmires
Farm and Stormy Hall.
Here turn left and follow the road to the T-junction where there is
a lane heading South to Botton village. At the bend in this lane you
will see a flagged stone footpath on your left which leads to the
viillage.
The village has several shops and a cafe, and is well worth a visit.
From the village make for Falcon Farm then take the footpath to Botton
Farm. Continue Northwards towards East Cliff Farm, where you come
to a stile and a the footpath East to the Jack Sledge Road.
Head up this latter footpath, which takes you intially steeply up
to Danby Rigg.
On the Rigg, there is a footpath which heads in a North-Esaterly direction
until meeting another footpath heading almost due North.
This latter path takes you first to Ainthorpe, and then onwards (on
the road) to Danby.
