12.5 miles
Explorer OL27, - North York Moors, Eastern Area.
A linear walk, which can be adjusted legthwise and starting point
(start from or finish at Sandsend, for instance).
The walk is very straightforward, and apart from a couple of steep
ascents / descents (above the railway tunnel out of Sandsend,
and into and out of Runswick) there are no difficulties.
Navigation is very easy, as the route follows the Cleveland Way
footpath which is well signposted and waymarked.

Some new mapping software is now available which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Parking at the Staithes car park (NZ781 185), Sandsend
(NZ860 129), or Whitby (NZ899 107). All car parks require a fee of
about £5 for a long stay.
The walk described is from Whitby to Staithes.
Head from the car park past the railway station to the Swing Bridge
and the West Pier.
You can either go down to the beach just before the pier, or, if the
tide is in climb up to the West Cliff and walk along the top until
there is a suitable point to come down to the beach.
Head along the beach to Sandsend. Again, if the tide comes in there
are plenty of alternative paths above the beach.
Cross the East Row Beck and then the Sandsend Beck in Sandsend. Head
through the car park, and take the steps up to the Cleveland Way footpath.
This follows the old railway track bed.
Just before the railway tunnel, the path climbs steeply up through
woodland via some stone steps.
Once on top of the cliffs, simply follow the coastal path all the
way to Runswick.
In Runswick, there is a path up to the upper car park which wends
its way past the backs of the cottages in Runswick.
Once up on top, simply follow the signposted Cleveland Way footpath
past Port Mulgrave to Staithes.
