Explorer Map OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (Northern & Central
Areas).
A walk through one of the lesser known dales in Yorkshire, -
but one of the most attractive and enjoyable dales.
By following the described route, - an anti-clockwise circuit
from West Burton, you walk Northwards up Walden Dale. If the sun
is out, then you have some superb scenery to enjoy.
There is a fairly steep climb up to Burton Pasture from Thoralby.
Up on Burton Pasture the ground was somewhat boggy and uneven.
In Walden Dale, the route follows farm footpaths, which can be
muddy and uneven,
Navigation is straightforward, though it helps to follow the 1
: 25,000 scale map at times.

Some new mapping software is now available which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from the main street in West Burton (SE01771 86691).
Follow the road out of West Burton, and where the road bends right
take the footpath on your left.
This footpath is only 75 yards long (according to the finger post!)
and takes you to the B6160 road.
Cross the road and take the signposted footpath over fields to Eshington
Bridge.
Cross the bridge and take the lane that leads to Thoralby.
Follow the road through Thoralby to meet the B6160 road again. Cross
this road, turn left, and take the footpath South South East up to
Burton Pasture.
At the top you cross a field wall and immediately turn right along
the clear track (though wet and uneven) to the finger post that shows
the footpath down into Walden Dale.
When you reach the road, turn right and head for Hill Top Farm.
Just past the drive way for Hill Top Farm, a finger post shows the
footpath back to West Burton.
Follow this field footpath to Cote Bridge.
Cross the bridge, and immediately on your left take the field footpath
back to West Burton, calling in at the Falls at the end of the path.
