Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors Eastern Area.
This walk provides an opportunity to walk through some absolutely
superb woodland, and at the same time to have a look at two ancient
castles.
HOWEVER, - Mulgrave Woods are privately owned, and are only
open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Additionally, Mulgrave Woods are CLOSED for the whole of May.
Therefore, make sure that you only do this walk on one of the
OPEN days.
As the woods are privately owned, there are no way marks or footpath
signs. You need to follow a 1:25,000 OS map to be sure of where
you are.
The paths and tracks are generally very clear and easy to follow.
With these limitations in mind, if the weather is good you will
have a really enjoyable walk.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the
above link.
(Overlay made with Version 4 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from Ugthorpe village, outside the Church of England
church (NZ79968 11135).
Follow the road East to Low Broom House Farm (the road is quiet, but
obviously needs care when walking along it).
At Low Broom House Farm the footpath has been diverted, along the
road for another 50 yards, then right through a gate. However, this
diversion is VERY easy to miss die to the poor state of the signs.
Follow the field footpath due East to Barnby Sleights Farm, then continue
East into Mulgrave Woods.
Mulgrave Castle is due East along a clear track.
At the Castle, leave by the Western entrance and walk round the Castle
on its South side until you come to an information board. Just past
this board is a set of steps that descend fairly steeply to a broad
track.
Follow the track due East until you come to Sandsend, by the road
bridge over the East Row Beck.
Stay to the North of the beck, and walk along the coast (pavement)
to the Sandsend Beck.
Now head West past the several cottages to cross the Sandend Beck
at a footbridge just opposite a church.
Just past this point, on your right, you will find a footpath that
leads back into the Mulgrave Woods.
From here, basically head West along tracks and footpaths to the ancient
"Motte".
From here there is a footpath that takes you back to Barnby Sleights
Farm.
From this farm, you retrace your steps back to Ugthorpe.
