Outdoor Leisure Map No 308 - Durham and Sunderland
This is a "four seasons" walk, which can be
made at any time of the year.
There are no problems with finding your way around, and providing
you have a good map and a sense of direction it is an easy route to
follow.
There are some superb views to be had of the Deerness and Lanchester
Valleys, so if the walk can be made on a fine, sunny day so much the
better.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the
above link.
(Overlay made with Version 4 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from just inside Langley Park where the road from
the A691 enters the village. On the map a car park is shown on the
right, but this was gated closed when we were there. Opposite this
car park is a road leading to "Digger Land", and we used
this for parking (NZ21425 45194).
Follow the Lanchester Valley walkway Eastwards, crossing the River
Browney via two old railway bridges. At NZ232 447 a kissing gate on
the right takes you to the field footpath that leads West South Westwards.
The footpath is not clear, and
crosses a field uphill. At the top of the field you will find a stile
which takes you to more easily followed footpath that leads to Ushaw
College.
Follow the roadway that passes to the North of Ushaw College, past
Mill House, to a minor road. Here turn right, then very soon after
turn left to take the footpath to Esh.
At Esh, continue along the lane to the North of Esh Hall which curves
round and descends to the settlement of Heugh.
Here turn right to follow the farm track to Quebec,
In Quebec, head along the main street. Just past the village pub,
on your right, is a small recreation field and a footpath waymarked
as going Northwards.
Follow this footpath to Biggin Terrace and onwards to Biggen House
Farm.
At the farm, turn left and pass the various farm buildings. Having
crossed a farm gate, the footpath to Malton is diaginally across a
field. The footapth is clearly signposted and waymarked.
After passing through the Malton Nature Reserve, you enter the settlement
of Malton.
Here turn left and follow the road for a short distance.
The Lanchester Valley Walkway is clearly indicated. Follow this back
to Langley Park.
