In the Lanchester Valley is the small settlement of Malton, which used to be another pit village. The colliery at Malton was owned by Sir S A Sadler. This War Memorial for the First World War commemorates the men employed by Sir S A Sadler Ltd who lost their lives in that war. The first name on the memorial was Sir Samuel Sadler's son, Captain Gerard Sadler.
