Explorer Map No OL26, - North York Moors, Western Area
Although the walk described was made under VERY wet conditions,
it is nonetheless a walk which can be enjoyed at any time of the
year. It would be absolutely delightful in Summer time, with plenty
of viewsand the interest of the chapel at Scots Corner, the Mount
Snever Observatory, and Byland Abbey.
There are two scents, though they are not unduly steep.
In wet conditions, the ascent up to Cam Farm through Cockerdale
Wood can be very slippery and care is needed.
Take care using the map when returning from the Observatory. Follow
the indicated Forestry tracks and don't be tempted to take short
cuts along Snever Scar.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from Kilburn village in the small car park near
the entrance to the Church (SE51347 79590).
Take the track uphill from this car park, that initially skirts the
churchyard and heads up to High Kilburn.
In High Kilburn village, take the first signposted footpath on your
left, which takes you to Brow Bank (and views of the White Horse).
Descend to River Road, and leave the field via a gate. Turn left along
the road.
At Oldstead Road, turn right and follow the road to Oldstead.
When you come to a T-junction (with a Millennium bench overlooking
it), turn left, then continue uphill along a track marked "unsuitable
for motor vehicles".
Follow the track until you come to the chapel at Scots Corner.
Turn round andhead downhill again, and at the first footpath sign
on your left take the path over fields to Cockerdale Farm.
Past the farm, follow the waymarks for the footpath through Cockerdale
Wood to Cam House and Cam Farm.
This footpath starts out as a Forestry track, but a footpath sign
on your left directs you to a steep path through Cockerdale Wood.
At Cam House and Cam Farm, follow the waymarks that lead you to footpaths
across fields to the woods above Snever Scar.
Immediately on entering the woods, turn right to follow the track
to the Observatory.
From the Observatory, retrace your steps to the point where you entered
the woods, then take the Forestry track to Wass.
There is a footpath along the edge of the Scar, but this needs some
care.
In Wass, turn right at the cross-roads and follow the road to Byland
Abbey.
P ast the Abbey, there is a singposted footpath on your right that
takes you across fields in the direction of Cams Head Farm.
Near the farm, take the left footpath which takes you to the road
South of Fox Folly Farm.
Here turn right and follow the road past Fox Folly Farm and Kilburn
Thicket (on your left).
Where the road bends sharp right, there is a waymarked footpath that
takes you to Weatherill Barn Farm, High Kilburn, and then Kilburn.
