Explorer Map Nos OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A walk combining some delightful scenery with visits
to two historical villages in the North Yorkshire Moors, - Rosedale
Abbey and Lastingham.
Lastingham makes an ideal place to stop for a picnic lunch, after
visiting the historic church of St. Mary.
The route between Rosedale Abbey and Lastingham starts with a stiff
climb up to Rosedale Bank, but once up on the moor the path to Lastingham
follows a shooters' track and is very straightforward.
The return from Lastingham follows the bridleway along the Seven
Valley, which is relatively easy going.
Immedialey out of Lastingham, and connecting with this bridleway,
is a footpath across farmland where there are several stiles to
cross and some very muddy ground.

may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from the car park in Rosedale Abbey near the Milburn
Arms (SE72388 95873).
Head out along the road out of Rosedale Abbey as though you were going
to travel up Rosedale Bank towards Hutton-le-Hole (though walking
up this road is not advisable).
A short distance up this road a footpath is signposted heading South
West. Cross the minor road by the golf course, and then follow the
footpath waymarks to cross the golf course and head up towards Rosedale
Bank.
Once up at Bank Top, walk a short distance in a South Westerly direction
along the minor road until you come to a shooters' track on your left.
This is clearly indicated by a gate which warns against traffic and
vehicles using the track.
Follow the track to the Ana Cross, and then continue along the track
in a southerly direction towards Lastingham.
Just outside Lstingham there is a Millenium Stone. At this point,
turn right to follow the footpath beside the stone wall that takes
you to the Mary Magdalene Well.
You can shorten the walk by going straight ahead at this point, directly
into Lastingham, if needs be.
Follow the road from the Mary Magdalene Well (a rather inconspicuous
swamp) into Lastingham village.
Cross the road bridge over the Hole Beck, then turn left up the road
for about 50 yards.
On your right is a footpath sign that directs you to a hidden lane
that heads East. At the end of the lane is a waymarked footpath over
farm land that heads East to eventually cross the Tramnire Beck.
Once over the beck, follow the path uphill until you meet the track
that heads Northwards up the Seven Valley.
Follow this track all the way back to Rosedale Abbey.
