Explorer Map Nos OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern Area)
A walk using farm tracks, farm footpaths, and some
road walking.
Although navigation isn't particularly difficult, it certainly helps
to have a 1 : 25,000 map to hand to help identify field patterns.
There are a couple of sections where waymarks appear to be missing,
and this is wherethe map helps.
Although there are some gradients, they are all quite reasonable.
In wet weather, some of the gradients that use farm footpaths can
be rather slippery.
The scenery compensates for any small difficulties you may experience,
and is thoroughly rewarding.
This is a walk that can be thoroughly recommended for just about
any time of year.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Start from the car park in Lealholm village, just near
the village school. - NZ76527 07642.
Turn left out of the car park and immediately take the farm track
to Underpark Farm.
Here, follow the waymarks to take the footpath beside the River Esk
that takes you to Rake Farm (check your 1 : 25,000 map for small details
of the route).
Cross the railway line by the bridge at Rake Farm, then almost immediately
turn right to take the footpath to Glaisdale Mill.
From the Mill, take the road downhill to Carr End, where you cross
the road to take the footpath down to the River Esk. Here, you can
look at the Beggars Bridge, before returning to take the waymarked
footpath (part of the Coast to Coast footpath) through East Arnecliff
Wood.
When you meet the minor road, turn left and follow it towards Egton
Bridge. Just past Egton Manor, turn right down the broad track that
leads to Grosmont.
Opposite a white house on your right, there is an unmarked gate that
marks the footpath over the fields to Egton. This path soon leads
to another pair of gates over the railway line. Heading North North
West across two fields, you come to a lane that leads you to Egton
village.
Turn left to visit St. Hilda's Church.
Retrace your steps and head North up the village main street. Almost
opposite the pub at the top of Egton village, there is a road that
heads due West and is signposted to Glaisdale.
Head along this road, and when you come to the cemetery and old church,
take the footpath to Westonby Farm. Using a 1:25,000 map definitely
helps you to follow field patterns on this section of the route.
From Westonby Farm, take the waymarked footpath to Thornhill farm,
Hall Park Farm, and Hill House Farm and on to Underpark Farm.
From here, return along the track to Lealholm.
