Explorer Map No 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton
A circular walk linking two extremely attractive villages
in the Howardian Hills.
The route is very straightforward, and is well marked and signposted.
There are no significant gradients, and the walk is suitable for
any time of the year.
Autumn colours made the woodland very attractive, but the woods
would give equal pleasure in Spring or Summer.
After recent heavy rain, parts of the route were very muddy, - though
not excessively so.
The only note of caution is where the route uses the minor road
leading South out of Hovingham. This road is surprisingly well used,
and you need to be very careful with respect to traffic.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!
Park in Hovingham village hall car park (SE66776 75659).
Take the road South out of Hovingham (the High Street) and then take
the minor road towards Terrington in a South Westerly direction. After
about 100 yards the Ebor Way footpath is signposted along a broad
track heading South.
The footpath is well signposted and waymarked through South Wood,
and is followed to Howthorpe Farm.
At the farm, follow the track to the left of the farm house.
Follow the track until it comes to a junction. At this point, continue
on the right track (don't turn left).
After about 200 yards, the footpath to Terrington is signposted on
your right.
This footpath crosses several fields, but is easily followed.
You enter Terrington at the playing fields. Turn left down the lane
towards the church, and continue past the church to the main street.
Here turn right and continue along the main street until you come
to the Plump, - the village green.
Here turn right, and continue down New Road, - signposted as being
a no through road. Before Swamill Cottage, this becomes a track. Follow
the footpath waymarks past Rose Cottage Farm, through Swinsey Carr
Wood, to eventually come out at the minor road.
Turn right, and follow the minor road due North for about 1/2 mile
(CARE, - TRAFFIC!).
Just before South Wood, take the waymarked footpath on your left that
leads to Scacleton.
This footpath soon becomes a track. Where the track meets a metalled
lane leading to Hovingham Lodge turn right and continue along this
lane until you come to the waymarked footpath (reached by a VERY narrow
kissing gate) that passes through Mill Wood.
When you reach the minor road, cross over and enter a field where
a permissive footpath takes you to the Pickering Bridge in Hovingham
Park.
Do not cross the bridge, but turn left and follow the waymarked footpath
back to Hovingham.
