10.5 miles.
Explorer Map 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton.
A year-round walk, of two parts.
On the outward leg, from Slingsby to Amotherby, the walk rises gently
to the ridge that overlooks Ryedale to the North and the Howardian Hills
to the South. The route follows an ancient earthworks, which can be
clearly made out to the South of the footpath. The footpath goes through
woodland, and sections proved to be quite muddy.
The second section of the walk follows farm footpaths (mainly) between
the "Street villages" of Amotherby, Appleton-le-Street, Barton-le-Street,
and then back to Slingsby.
Some of these footpaths go right across agricultural land, and in some
cases are not at all clearly marked. Use of a map where you can follow
field patterns is essential.

Park outside Slingsby Church (SE69678 74884). An alternative
parking place is on Slingsby Green, to the East of the Church.
FRom the church, take the road South, and a short distance along, past
the Castle ruins, there is a footpath sign pointing West.
Follow this footpath for about 100 yards, and then take the footpath
South West across two fields to the B1257 road.
Cross the road and follow the farm track gently uphill to where it enters
woodland. Here follow the marked footpath to meet the Centenary Way
heading East South East.
Continue along the Centenary Way, crossing the Slingsby Bank road to
Castle Howard (GREAT CARE needed, as the road is blind on the Southern
side). Continue to SE714 728, where the Centenary Way leaves the ridge
and heads South West. At this point continue in a South Easterly direction
until you come to Park House (a trading estate).
Join the Coneysthorpe - Malton road and turn left to head Eastwards.
This road can be quite busy, so care is needed.
At Easthorpe Cottages, head North to Amotherby using the Amotherby Lane.
An alternative is to continue past Easthorpe Cottages to where a farm
track heads Northwards to Amotherby.
In Amotherby, make fr the Parish Church.
From the Parish Church, head West to Main Street, then turn right up
main street for about 100 yards. Follow the footpath West, at this point,
across agricultural land to Appleton-le-Street. In parts the footpath
crosses fields directly, and it helps to be able to follow field patterns
using a full scale map.
From Appleton-le-Street, initially follow the B1257 Westwards, but past
Appleton House follow the footpath Westwards to Barton-le-Street.
In Barton-le-Street the footpath to Slingsby is clearly marked at Manor
Farm.
Re-enter Slingsby along Green Dike Lane.
