Explorer Maps Nos 307 (Consett & Derwent Reservoir) &
316 (Newcastle-on-Tyne)
This walk is centred round the successful introduction
of Red Kites to the Derwent Vally Area.
The stated aim is to be able to view the Red Kites in the wild, together
with much other wild life.
Although we only had a glimpse of the Red Kites, the walk is still hugely
enjoyable as it passes through some wonderful woodland and countryside
that is literally on the doorstep ogf Gateshead and Newscatle-on-Tyne.
The walk can be adjusted, - so that if you want an easy stroll you can
cover just the first part (4 miles) and then catch a bus back.
If you want the full walk, the Red Kite trail guide (below) gives you
a very full description of the route.
Navigation is EXTREMELY easy, - providing you keep your eyes open and
follow the "Red Kite Trail" markers you don't need to use
the Ordnance Survey Maps above, - just use the trail guide for guidance.
There are some moderate gradients on the second part of the walk, and
some of the paths on this section were very muddy.
