12.2 miles.
Outdoor Leisure Map OL26 - North York Moors (Western Area)
A route that can be walked at any time of the year. Although
we thoroughly enjoyed walking the route in February, it would be particularly
attractive in the Summer months with all the plants in leaf.
The route is completely flat, with only a very brief bit of a hill in
Nunnington.
The route described is just over 12 miles in length, but can easily
be adapted for a shorter walk by following the route between Harome
and Nunnington only. THis is about 7 miles in length.

The start of the walk is from the main long stay car park in Helmsley
(SE61057 83778). There is a charge for using this car park, but there
is usually plenty of space here (as opposed to limited parking elsewhere)
and there is a toilet block.
Head South out of Helmsley on the main road, but before the bridge that
crosses the River Rye go down the street opposite. The Ebor Way is signposted
in Sawmill Lane. Continue along the road in Sawmill Lane (watch for traffic!)
and just past the National Park maintenance buildings turn left onto the
lane that leads you to the old disused railway track. Although it is tempting
to continue walking along the old railway track, the footpath itself actually
goes slightly to one side (the North side) of the track. Where an old
railway bridge is reached, head East along the field boundary to reach
the minor road between Helmsley and Harome.
Follow this road into Harome.
From the Church in Harome, head east along the main street.
At the end of the main street, just before you reach a particularly attractive
thatched cottage, a street heads South. Go down this street for a very
short distance. Just past the Methodist Church (a prominent red brick
building) there is a clearly signposted footpath to Nunnington.
Follow this footpath South to the River Riccal, cross the footbridge,
and then head South East with the River Riccal to your left.
Just before Crook House Farm, the footpath to Nunnington is way marked
South South West (another footpath continues straight ahead, - don't take
this one).
From here, follow the way mark signs to Nunnington.
Cross the footbridge over the River Rye in Nunnington, then head East
along the street towards Nunnington Hall.
At the cross-roads before Nunnington Hall (near the stone bridge over
the River Rye) turn right up the hill towards Nunnington's War Memorial
(at a cross-roads). Here head West towards Nunnington's parish church.
At the church, turn right and head down the hill towards the footbridge
over the River Rye.
DON'T cross the footbridge, but instead take the signposted footpath to
Harome.
Follow the footpath to where a footbridge takes you across a beck that
flows into the River Rye at a bend in the river. The way mark sign seems
to indicate that the footpath is straight ahead at this point. IT ISN'T.
Instead, turn left, heading West until you reach Moor Lane.
Once you are at Moor Lane, the sign posts and way marks clearly indicate
the footpath back to Harme. For much of the time this footpath follows
the River Rye. You eventually return to Harome via Hall Lane.
Just opposite the Pheasant Inn in Harome, there is a duck pond. By the
duck pond, a signposted footpath takes you back to the Harome-Helmsley
road.
From here, retrace your steps to Helmsley.
