Explorer Map OL27 - North York Moors (Eastern
Area)
A "there-and-back" walk, returning along the
same path that you go out on.
The route follows the Esk Valley Way between Egton Bridge and Sleights,
and is well marked all the way. The route is very easy to follow, and
should present no problems with navigation.
There are some superb views to be had, - especially of the Esk Valley
itself.
Although the route isn't totally flat, the ascents and descents are
not all that severe and should present no problems.
We found that in parts the route was extremely muddy, and the stone
flags of the trod were very slippery. However, there had been some exceptionally
heavy rain only the night before.
All in all, this should prove to be a very enjoyable walk, which can
be done at any time of the year. And if you want to shorten the walk,
simply return from Sleights to Egton Bridge by train, - a 15 minute
journey!

Start from the car park by Egtom Bridge Railway Station. (NZ80503 05262).
Go down the road past the Catholic Church for about 100 yards, and on the
opposite side of the road is an old Toll Road signposted as part of the
Esk Valley Way to Grosmont.
Head Eastwards along this road, passing under the Middlesbrough-Whitby
railway line, until after about one mile you come to the minor road leading
into Grosmont.
Turn left on this road, then right at the T-junction. Follow the minor
road until it comes to a sharp right-angle bend. At this point go straight
ahead along the farm track to Grosmont Farm.
Now, simply follow the Esk Valley Way signposts that direct you to Newbiggin
Hall Farm, Back Wood, Lodge Farm, and Sleights.
In Sleights, cross the main road and continue for about 200 yards along
the minor road until you come to the footbridge over the River Esk.
Cross this bridge to Sleights Station.
