Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A circuit of Danby Dale, which involves no significant gradients.
The walk makes extensive use of farm footpaths and farm tracks, which
in wet weather can prove to be extremely muddy. Also, there are a number
of stiles, including steps over stone walls, which took some effort to
get over, - especially where they became slippery when wet.
Although the walk was enjoyable in winter-time, it would be especially
pleasurable in the summer on a fine day, as there are extensive views
of Danby Dale and Esk Dale to be enjoyed.
The walk passes through Botton Village, a Camphill Community. The workshops
of this Community may be visited, and products bought from their shops.

The walk starts from the street in Caslteton that leads
on to Wandels Lane (NZ689 080). There is very limited parking in Castleton,
so please respect the local residents.
Head South down Wandels Lane to St. Hilda's Church.
From St. Hilda's Church, head North up the road for a hundred yards or
so, then take the farm road East to North End Farm. Pass through the farmyard
to the waymarked footpath that takes you to Lumley House Farm, Botton
Grove Farm and East Cliff Farm. The footpath is reasonably well waymarked,
but it helps to use your 1:25,000 map to follow field patterns.
At East Cliff Farm the footpath South is a little bit difficult to find.
The footpath takes you to Roger's House, part of the Camphill Community.
Continue South along what is now a good track to Falcon Farm, and from
here head into Botton Village, - making for the Camphill Community Church.
Turn left at the Church to follow the lane to High Farm.
Here, there is a road that leads to Honey Bee Nest Farm, - another part
of the Camphill Community.
At Honey Bee Nest Farm, take the track that heads almost due North, -
part of the waymarked Eskdale Way.
Follow the Eskdale Way North past Nook House Farm, Stormy Hall Farm, West
Cliff Farm, Plum Tree Farm, and others all the way back to Castleton.
