Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)
A walk starting out from the centre of Swainby, taking in
Arncliffe Wood and Clain Wood, using the Cleveland Way footpath for about
1/3 of the overall route.
The walk can be done at any time of the year, and when the weather is
fine there are some stupendous views of the Cleveland Plain.
There are no especial navigational difficulties, as most of the route
uses well defined tracks, - especially the well signposted and (sometimes)
paved Cleveland Way footpath.
There are some gradients, but there is nothing unduly taxing.
When wet, parts of the track through Arncliffe Wood can be very muddy.

Start from Swainby village centre. There is a convenient
area for car parking by the public toilets (NZ47638 02160).
Head South down Swainby's Hight Street. Turn right into Claver Close,
and straight ahead there is a footpath sign directing you to a field path
that leads you to Back Lane.
Travel along Back Lane to where it turns sharp left. At this point there
is a track straight ahead with a sign post to Scarth Lees and Scarth Wood.
Foolow this track South West, and at Scarth Lees Farm follow the waymarked
footpath South West to Scarth Wood Farm (which is passed on your left).
Continue along the waymarked footpath to enter Arncliffe Wood.
In Arncliffe Wood, continue South South West along the Forestry track
to where it meets the track up from Arncliffe Hall.
Continue along the track in a Southerly direction, passing Park House
(an Adventure Centre) on your right.
The track eventually climbs up through South Wood, exiting the wood at
a point where there is a view West down onto the A19 road that runs through
the valley.
At this point, turn back on yourself to join the signposted Cleveland
Way footpath that heads North North East to Scarth Wood Moor.
Continue heading East on the Cleveland Way, past Scarth Nick (where it
crosses a minor road), through Clain Wood, and up to Hollin Hill Farm.
Past Hollin Hill Farm, the Cleveland Way crosses another minor road and
continues gently climbing alongside some woodland.
At NZ493 012, the Cleveland Way continues ahead through a gate, and the
path rises steeply up a paved section of track. However, at this point,
there is a gate on your left which you need to go through to join the
footpath to Bank Lane, - which takes you into Faceby.
In Faceby, turn left into Church Lane.
Just past the Church, the footpath is waymarked to take you West past
Whorl Hill Farm and back to Whorlton and Swainby.
