Outdoor Leisure Map OL27, - North York Moors (East)
This walk is best undertaken with good visibility so that
you can enjoy the views.
The walk is one of two halves, - the outward section follows the Cleveland
Way along the cliffs towards Robin Hood's Bay. Fairly undemanding walking,
and with superb sea views.
The second section of the walk from Robin Hood's Bay to Hawsker, via Fylingthorpe
and Raw, involves some slightly tricky navigation. Fyligthorpe and Raw
are delightful villages, and the countryside around them has some spectacular
views. However, some of the footpaths are not at all clear, and careful
us eof a 1 : 25,000 scale map is needed at times.

Start from a layby on the B1447 that heads South out of
High Hawsker for Robin Hood's Bay. The layby is by a sharp right-hand
bend in the road by the entrance to the Seaview Caravan Park, at NZ93205
07566.
From this layby there is a marked footpath across a field, heading North
West. This crosses the disused railway line and leads you to the farm
track that for Gnipe Howe Farm. Continue to Gnipe Hoew Farm, then take
the marked footpath to the cliff top, where you join the Cleveland Way.
Turn right to follow the broad and well marked Clevalnd Way footpath all
the way to Robin Hood's Bay.
Continue along the clearly marked footpath through Robin Hood's Bay, heading
for Ravenscar.
However, at NZ051 045 the Cleveland Way turns sharp left; at this point
you want to take the footpath straight ahead instead, leading to Mark
Lane, Middlewood Lane, and Fyligthorpe.
In Fylingthorpe, continue along the road to cross the ford and end up
at a cross roads, with the Post Office straight ahead.
Turn left at the cross roads, and continue West (uphill). The lane to
Raw is at NZ940 048. The footpath is NOT marked, and after entering a
metalled lane the footpath proper becomes an overgrown track. Although
the path is clearly a footpath, it may need a little looking for.
The footpath exits at a narrow road, where you turn right. After a short
distance you will see Harton House Farm on your left. Just past this farm
the footpath can be found (unmarked) through a hedge. There is a kissing
gate at this point. Follow the footpath North West, initally along the
hedge line. Do NOT take what appears to be a path, but is, in fact another
trackleading North. The correct footpath will take you to a cottage in
a valley, and beyond that is the footpath to Raw.
Head uphill through Raw along the minor road. At NZ932 057 there is a
track leading to a scrap car dealership (yes, really!). Follow this track,
and past the farm buildings find the footpath that heads West to the A171.
Take care here, - there is another footpath that heads North West which
you do NOT want.
When you reach the A171, cross over.
Do NOT continue down the track to Fern Farm. On your left you will see
a stile that leads into the field to the left of the Fern Farm drive.
This stile is in poor condition, and somewhat hidden. Cross the field
to a line of hawthorn bushes on the other side, and continue, - keeping
them on your right.
You will eventually come to the Hawsker Intake Road, a broad track that
heads North North West towards Hawsker.
When you reach the minor road, continue into Low Hawsker, and then follow
the B1447 back to your starting point.
