Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)
A very enjoyable circular walk that takes in two moorland
villages (Danby and Commondale), with views of a third one (Castleton).
The route passes three moorland crosses, - Siss Cross, Job Cross, and
White Cross.
Most of the walking is over well defined footpaths and tracks, with a
little bit of road walking. There is one section, though, over Danby Low
Moor which uses the Siss Cross Road, - a very poorly defined (in parts)
footpath. You will need to use your compass to make certain that you are
following the correct path.
For this section of walking over moorland, the usual safety considerations
apply.
Overall, though, there is plenty of varied scenery on this walk and it
is very rewarding hike in the summer time.

Start from car parking area just outside the railway station
in Danby (NZ707 084). However, do NOT use what appears to be a parking
area through some gates where a sign shows a 5 m.p.h. limit, and care!
- children. This is private land, and the owners (a children's kindergarten)
do not want cars to park there.
From the station car park, head for the Methodist Chapel and then take
the signposted footpath West to Castleton. This starts out as a paved
trod, but soon joins the road to Castleton.
Follow the road Westwards for a short distance, until the footpath is
once again signposted at NZ701 084. Continue along this path for a short
distance, until you come to the waymarked junction at NZ696 085.
Here follow the broad grassy track North Eastwards. Just before a small
patch of woodland, the path heads East through a small gate.
This gate, which is waymarked, needs to be watched out for, as it is quite
easy to think that the footpath passes to the left of the woodland.
The footpath, - now the Pannierman's Causeway, crosses the Ewe Crag Beck
before passing to the left of a cottage by the Rosedale Intake.
Continue along the path until you come to a short section of the paved
trod.
At the end of the trod, there is a waymark post indicating a junction
of paths.
Make sure that you follow the Northerly path; there is a path which takes
you Westwards which looks very inviting, but simply returns you to the
patch of woodland previously mentioned.
Cross Danby Low Moor, passing the Siss Cross, using the rather poorly
defined path, - ensuring that you are travelling Northwards.
The Siss Cross Road (footpath) meets a broad shooter's track at NZ703
113.
Follow this track Westwards for the next 2 kilometres or so. Parts of
the track have been thoroughly churned up by 4x4 enthusiasts, - rather
a depressing sight.
The Job Cross can be spotted (and visited) at NZ68572 10984.
When the track meets the road on Three Howes Rigg, turn right.
(The White Cross is at this junction. If you want to shorted the walk,
continue Westwards along the road directly into Commondale.)
Follow the road North Westwards (there is plenty of room at the side of
the road for safe walking) until you come to the footpath marker at NZ670
116 .
Here, take the easily followed footpath South towards Commondale, entering
Commondale by the road.
In Commondale, take the minor road South towards the railway station.
At Foul Green, take the signposted footpath East to Castleton and Danby.
Here you have an option of either continuing along the broad track to
Castleton, or taking the footpath beside the railway line, - which meets
up again with the broad track.
This broad track meets up with the road from Three Howes Rigg into Castleton.
Follow the road downhill for a short distance, until you see the track
/ footpath that is signposted to Danby. Follow this footpath East, through
the woodland in Danby Park, until you meet up with the path you started
out on in Danby.
