Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)
A delightful walk that can be undertaken at any time of
the year.
The best feature of the walk are the superb views from the heights above
Boltby, - East of Boltby the Cleveland Way footpath running between Sutton
Bank and Osmotherley, and to the West of Boltby Cowesby Moor. To get maximum
value from the walk, choose a day when the visibility is good. However,
even on a dull day the walk remain enjoyable.
There is a steep ascent up to Boltby Scar at the start of the walk, and
there are one or two smaller scents at other stages.
Otherwise, there are no real difficulties with the walk, - navigation
is very straightforward.

Start from Boltby village (SE49095 86612). There is VERY
little room to park in Boltby, and a recommended alternative start point,
with some car parking, is at Sneck Yate (SE50980 87687).
Walk East along the village street until you come to a lane at SE492 866.
Turn inti this lane and follow it in a South easterly direction until
it comes to a field. Go through the gate, here, and continue gently uphill
in a Southerly direction until you come to a gate at the edge of a plantation.
Do NOT go through this gate, which is waymarked, but climb STEEPLY uphill
with the plantation on your right. At the top, the path leaves the wooded
area to open rough pasture. Directly ahead of you (East) you can make
out a way mark by a gate, Head for this. The path is faint at first, but
by swinging round close to the plantation a very well defined path is
soon paicked up.
Pass through the gate, and follow the clear path East, and then South
East, climbing to meet the Cleveland Way footpath.
Once you meet the Cleveland Way Footpath, turn left and follow the well
marked and signposted path Northwards all the way to Steeple Cross (SE495
901).
At this point, head West onto the Forestry track through Boltby Forest.
Continue along this weel defined and marke dtrack, initially Westwards
and then South Westwards along Windygill Ridge.
At SE478 889 the track continues across srubland, heading downhill towards
Brickshed Cottage. The descent is initially gentle, but in parts becomes
quite steep.
At Bricksheds Cottage, turn left and follow the minor road South to Kirby
Knowle.
In Kirby Knowle, St. Wilfrid's Church is 100 yards or so South West at
the road junction.
However, at the road junction, continue South East along the waymarked
footpath across fields to Storth Wood.
Now, simply follow the finger posts that direct you along the footpath
back to Boltby.
