Expolorer Map OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (North)
A delightful walk through some of the best scenery in Wensleydale,
taking in not only the dramatic waterfalls at Aysgarth, but also the waterfalls
at West Burton, the villages of West Burton and West Witton, and gentle
Dales farmland.
Although the walk is mostly flat, there are one or two surprisingly steep
sections to both climb up and descend, - though there is nothing exceptional.
Although much of the walk is waymarked, there are a couple of sections
where it is highly advisable to consult a 1 : 25000 scale map, and follow
the field patterns.
However, if the walk is made in good weather, the views will be immensely
rewarding.

Start from the National Park centre, SE01155 88770 (fee
payable).
From the car park make your way down to the bridge over the River Ure.
Having crossed the river, climb up the hill using the road until you come
to the Church entrance. Enter the Church grounds. Opposite the Church
doorway, take the footpath heading South East, to cross the main road,
and continue in a South Easterly direction over farmland to Eshington
Bridge (way marks need to be watched out for).
Cross Eshington Bridge (SE01480 8777) and immediately take the waymarked
footpath on your right to West Burton.
Head in a Southerly direction to the village green at West Burton, then
make for the Falls at West Burton.
From the footbridge over the Walden Beck (SE019 867) below the Falls,
take the waymarked footpath for a short distance up the slope. At the
junction of footpaths at SE020 867, take the footpath that heads North
East to Morpeth Gate Lane.
Follow Morpeth Gate Lane North East until you come to the second waymarked
footpath at SE02665 87532. This footpath is sign posted to the Templar's
Chapel.
Follow the path to the Templar's Chapel, SE03565 88775, and continue in
an Easterly direction along the field edge towards West Witton. Foolw
the path all the way to West Witton, - though note that some care is needed
in following field patterns as you approach West Witton.
Head East through West Witton, until you come to the lane at SE06038 88427
signed "To The Church". Take this lane North to High Wanless
Farm.
Just before the farm, take the footpath that heads West across a field,
and then North West to the river. This footpath is NOT way marked and
you need to follow the field patterns on your map.
Once you reach the river, the footpath back to Aysgarth is clear and there
are plenty of way marks to assist you.
