Explorer Map OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (North)
This is a two-part walk, where either section could be walked
on its own if required.
The ascent of Addlebrough is relatively straightforward, though it involves
a fairly steep ascent and descent. This walk is best undertaken in high
visibility, as the views from the top of Addlebrough are just stupendous.
To make the ascent and not be able to enjoy the views would not be too
good an idea.
The route up, and down, Addlebrough makes use of permissive footpaths.
These are not shown on the Ordnance Survey map, but are marked by signposts.
The walk from Thornton Rust to Aysgarth and Thoralby is a straightforward
"countryside walk", making use of waymarked footpaths, farm
tracks, and some road walking. There are no particular navigational problems,
and only a couple of relatively mild ascents and descents. As with the
Addlebrough walk, the views are spectacular, and the walk is best done
on a fine day.

area for parking cars at SD97210 88800.
Cross the small ford and follow the walled lane and track that takes you
South / South West.
AT SD96718 88380 take the footpath across the pastureland,
heading in a South Westerly direction.
At SD95763 87565 a stile crosses a wall, and shortly after this the footpath
to the top of Addlebrough heads North West from the Bridleway. The footpath
is clearly visible and marked with posts, but it is still advisable to
check bearings using your map and compass.
When on the summit of Addlebrough, take time to walk to the West side
and look down on the Devil's Stone.
Descend from Addlebrough by a cairn which indicates steepish path down
at SD946 881. The footpath back to Thornton Rust is well marked and basically
follows the boundary wall back to the minor road. Turn right on the minot
road to return to Thornton Rust.
FRom Thornton Rust, take the road East and then the footpath South at
SD97448 88810. At SD97345 88525 take the footpath South East across pasture
land. Cross Gill Beck, and continue until you reach Gill Moor Lane. (on
the map, the footpath is shown as having the boundary wall on your right
at this point, - the actual path, though, is on the other side of the
wall).
Turn left into Gill Moor Lane and walk to Aysgarth.
From Aysgarth, take the footpath South at SE00138 88392. This path goes
by the ancient Friends Burial Ground on your left.
Follow the footpath South / South West until you meet the minor road leading
to Thoralby. Turn right, and walk towards Thoralby along this road for
a short distance.
At SE00400 87167 A footpath heading West / South West can be taken.
At SD99615 86772 the footpath meets a farm track.
Turn right, and at SD99540 86830 take the marked footpath North West to
take you back to Thornton Rust.
