Explorer Map 304 - Darlington and Richmond
This walk, a little bit longer than normal, makes extensive
use of farm footpaths and bridleways. There is some walking along minor
roads and farm tracks, but the majority of the route uses paths across
farmland.
The route is best followed using an Explorer map, keeping an eye on field
boundaries as you progress.
Although there are waymark signs along most of the route, you still need
to follow your map.
The paths can be very muddy and uneven, and rugged footwear is essential.

bend in the road by the Church. Follow the waymark signs to Alwent Farm.
Past Alwent Farm, take the footpath to cross a field to the minor road
that runs between Staindrop and Winston. Follow this road South for a
short distance, until you come to the footpath to Alwent Hall and Alwent
Mill at NZ13942 18854. Follow this footpath all the way past the Mill
until you come to a ford at NZ14942 18214.
Cross the footbridge over the Langley Beck at this point, then almost
immediately take the footpath on the other side of the beck that takes
you to the gatehouse for Selaby Hall (NZ15587 18014).
From here, take the minor road to the A67. Head West along the footpath
by the A67 until you come to the footpath that follows the disused railway
line to the River Tees at NZ15592 17519.

the Church as opposed to the bridge at Winston.
Continue along Winston's High Street, and opposite the Methodist Church
at NZ13937 16729 take the footpath to Little Newsham.
From Little Newsham, take the footpath to Morey farm (ruined), Wether
Hill Farm, Low Barford Farm, and High Barford (now an industrial site).
From here take the road to the A688.
Cross the A688, and a short distance West there is another footpath which
takes you to Woodend Farm and Staindrop Moor.
When you reach the B6279, cross over, and take the footpath to the edge
of Raby Park, which is enclosed by a high stone wall.
When you reach the wall, head in an Easterly direction along the footpath
that takes you all the way back to Staindrop. The Park wall is on your
left for most of the way.
