Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)
A curate's egg of a walk.
In parts the walk is through beautiful woodland on well made up paths,
and using farm tracks that are well maintained.
But in other parts the tracks were completely overgrown, so that following
then ranged from difficult to impossible (we had to turn back and look
for an alternative path).
One section of the walk is over a rough meadow that proved EXTREMELY taxing.
We also found that in at least two places the footpaths had been fenced
off or altered, so that we had to rely heavily on map reading to find
a way ahead.
This walk has great potential, but is NOT recommended for a first time
walker.

Start from Moorsholm village, by the Church. (NZ689145)
Head North out of the village along the road, and where the road bends
take the waymarked footpath North. Ignore the footpath that leaves the
track to the left, and continue along the track to the field gate at NZ68995
15032. Head North beside the field along the footpath until you reach
the woodland at NZ69040 15584.
Proceed North through the woodland, crossing the Hagg Beck by the footbridge.
We found that North of the Hagg Beck the footpath was totally overgrown,
and the only way to follow a course through it was, literally, by using
a Satellite Navigator!
Once out of the woodland, skirt the field to the right before following
the hedge North to the lane that runs past Buck Rush Farm. Follow the
Lane to Stank House .Farm
Just beyond Stank House Farm,a track heads South East to Castle Woods.
(There is a track due East to Kilton Castle, but note that permission
is required to visit the ruins).
In Castle Woods head due South along the Forestry track.
At NZ70015 16817 take the footpath East towards Park House Farm, crossing
the Liverton Beck by a footbridge.
Just before Park House Farm, take the minor road / track South to Liverton.
Continue East at Liverton, along a minor road, to Handale Bank.
At Handale Bank, the footpaths have been diverted, and following them
is somewhat difficult. Our initial intention was to head South West beside
the Handale Beck, but we had to turn back as the footpath was totally
overgrown. Instead, we followed the footpath East to Handale, and from
HandaleSouth East and then South to High Waupley Farm.
From High Waupley Farm, we took the footpath South towards Low Waupley
Farm. However, this footpath is hideously overgrown and took a great deal
of effort to use. We then found that the footpath West to Eskavon was
even worse, and it was wih some relief that we eventually reached Eskavon
Farm ("Bunnyland").
From Eskavon the footpaths taken were to Lane Head Farm, Liverton Lane,
Thatchmire Farm, and Pinkney Bank Wood.
Heading West from NZ70563 14354 the footpath has been fenced off with
no diversion signs in place. Some climbing of wire fences was required
here.
However, from Pinkney Bank Woods the remaining paths were clear and well
made, leading to CowClose Lane and Moorsholm.
