Explorer Map OL26, - North Yorkshire Moors, Western Area
A delightful "Four Seasons" walk, though best
done in Spring or Summer in good weather so that the views can be appreciated.
Provided that you have a good map (1:25000 scale) and a compass, there
are no real navigational problems. However, make sure that you follow
the way marks.
There are a few sections of road to be walked, and care is obviously needed
on these narrow country lanes.

Start from the car park at Hutton-le-Hole (SE70497 90227).
Note : small fee to be paid.
Head North along the road out of Hutton-le-Hole. At SE7029 9027 take the
way-marked footpath, initially heading North West, to Gillamoor. The footpath
is clearly way-marked all the way to Gillamoor, though it is essential
that you look out for, - and follow, these way marks.
From Gillamoor Church, take the way-marked footpath South East that leads
you down to the Shepherd's Road. Follow this track in a Southerly direction
to eventually meet the Back of Parks Road at SE7003 8843. Continue along
Back of Parks Road to the footpath at SE7031 8752.
Follow the footpath downhill in an Easterly direction until you come to
a minor road.
Here, turn left to eventually cross the River Dove at a footbridge.
From the crossing of the River Dove, head uphill in a Northerly direction
until you meet the road at SE7072 8040. Here turn tight to follow the
road in a Southerly direction for about half a mile. (CARE : This road
can be fairly busy).
At SE7115 8749 there is a farm track on your left which takes you Northwards
to Lingmoor Farm.
Just before the farm itself, there are way mark signs directing you to
the footpath that passes to the West of the farm.
Follow the way marked footpath Northwards, and then East, to Spaunton
Lane.
When you reach Spaunton village, turn right and follow the minor road
to Lastingham. There is a footpath beside this road which takes you to
the Victoria Cross, built in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond
Jubilee. There is a superb view of Lastingham from this Cross, but the
descent to the road is very steep and may prove awkward for some.
From Lastingham Church, take the road West back to Hutton-le-Hole. There
is a fotpath at SE7136 9039 which makes for a pleasant way back into the
village of Hutton-le-Hole.
