Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors Western Area
A walk taking in another section of the Cleveland Way. The
walk is taken from John Eckersley's "Cleveland Circles".
The walk is quite straightforward, and presents no especial navigational
difficulties. The descent, and the ascent, down into and from the valley
at Murton Wood is moderately steep. In dry weather, this should be no
problem, but in wet weather (and after rain) it can be very slippery.
There is another section, - the descent into Low Gill from Old Byland,
which is also very muddy and slippery in wet weather and after rain.
In all other respects, this is a "4 Seasons" walk.

Start from the centre of Cold Kirby village (SE53247 84546).
At the Eastern end of Cold Kirby, by a house marked "Ailred Barn",
there is a footpath that heads almost due North towards Murton Grange
Farm. This footpath descends into a valley at Murton Wood, where it crosses
a beck. The footpath is well signposted all the way.
At Murton Grange Farm, continue Northto the minor road, then head North
East along this road for a short distance. On your right there is a track,
with a bridleway signpost, hrading North East. Follow this track for a
short distance.
At SE538 883, the footpath leaves this track. Where the footpath leaves
the track isn't marked, though the path is fairly obvious.
Follow the footpath initially North East, then swinging South East, along
the edge of the woods. You come to a stone barn at SE559 875.
Here the footpath continues across a field in a South Easterly direction.
The path isn't marked, but is reasonably clear. Follow the path to Barnclose
Farm.
From Barnclose Farm, take the track South to Tylas Farm.
From Tylas Farm head in a South Westerly direction uphill, following a
farm track.
This farm track comes out on Clavery ley Lane. Here turn right and walk
along the Lane (a minor road) into Old Byland.
At SE549 857, as you leave Old Byland on the South side, there is a waymarked
footpath into Low Gill, - heading East.
Follow this footpath through Low Gill and Dick Wood until it meets Cold
Ley Lane again just above Ashberry Farm.
From Ashberry Farm, take the well signposted Cleveland Way West to return
to Cold Kirby.
