11.4 miles.
Outdoor Leisure Map No OL27 - North York Moors (East)

The walk was selected as it principally uses Forestry Commission tracks and footpaths, which are normally fairly firm underfoot. However, recent heavy weather had made sure that sections of the walk remained extremely wet and slippery.
For "light relief" we were able to watch the occasional steam train of the North York Moors Railway puffing up Newtondale.

Start from Levisham village green (SE8331690638).
Take the footpath West out of the village that leads to the edge of Newtondale, where the footpath then continues downwards in a Northerly direction heading eventually for Levisham Station.
Cross the railway line, and follow the Forest Drive to just past Platelayers Cottages (holiday homes).
Here turn left up the Forestry track and look for the footpath on the right at SE813924.
Follow the footpath due North to where it meets a roadway at Raindale Head (SE8116594077).
Here take the footpath due North to the Forest Drive at Brown Howe (SE8121094991).
Take the Forest Drive due East (watch out for traffic), followed by a Forestry track due East, to a point where a footpath heads South East to Needle Eye (SE841954).
Descend to the valley floor, then head back along Forestry tracks and paths (all clearly marked) to Levisham Station. Newtondale Halt railway station is at SE8343494864.
