Explorer Map No 30.
A high moorland walk, taking in
some of the old lead mining industry above Swaledale.
The walk is at an elevation of up to 1800 ft, and is therefore subject
to poor weather. It is best undertaken in summertime, and when the visibility
is good, - not only as this makes navigation easier, but there are some
superb views.
Use of a map and compass is absolutely essential, and there are one
or two places where the ground is very wet underfoot.
Watch out for old mineshafts and pits on top of the moor.
Start from the roadside at SE0384396332.
Head in a South Westerly direction along the somewhat indistinct footpath,
heading uphill, for the Height of Greets, SE0284295674.
Proceed along the clearly defined track, South, to Dent's Houses (SE0304294241).
Take the Westerly heading Apedale Road through Apedale, to the summit
at SD997954, passing through the gate. Follow the track to the area
known as Morley's Folly (old mine workings).
At SD9930995548 head North along a VERY indistinct footpath. (Map reading
skills required).
After a short while this footpath passes some grouse shooting butts,
and a distinct footpath becomes apparent.
Follow the footpath, and then track round Grinton Moor, - heading in
an easterly direction.
At SE0326597239 take the track that heads South West to an old lead
mine at SE0273596690.
from here, take the track East to the road.
