9.84 miles.
Outdoor Leisure Map No 31.
This walk takes in the reservoirs
of Baldersdale, walking along the Northern edges of Hury and Blackton
reservoirs, and the Eastern side of Balderhead reservoir.
The return half of the walk takes in part of the Pennine Way, skirting
Goldsborough Rigg, and taking in some bleak moorland scenery. This can
be quite wet and boggy, and the usual precautions should be taken for
crossing the moors.
The walk finally crosses a series of farmers' fields before returning
to the start point.
Start from the car park at the SE
end of Hury Reservoir, NY9664419227.
Cross the dam and then follow the well marked Waterboard path along
the North side of the reservoir.
Continue past the North side of the small un-named reservoir and Blackton
reservoir until you come to Birk Hat Farm at NY9352718353. Here you
can follow the Pennine Way North for a short while in order to see "Hannah's
Meadow", a Nature Reserve.
Return to Birk Hat Farm and continue along the path to Blackton Bridge,
Take the path to Blackton Youth Hostel, NY9307017967, and beyond to
Balderhead Reservoir.
Return past the Youth Hostel to then take the Pennine Way South to Clove
Lodge, NY9352217663.
Here, take the metalled road East for about a mile to where another
section of the Pennine Way heads South East at NY9481417881.
Continue to where there is a faint footpath at How Beck Head, NY963173,
and head North East to where another footpath is found by the fence
line at NY9688018075.
Follow this footpath North to return to your starting point.
