Outdoor Leisure Map No 30, - Yorkshire Dales Northern &
Central Areas
A walk that might be described
in some guide books as "strenuous". Several uneven and rocky
pathways, and at a couple of places the need for a head for heights.
However, all of this is rewarded with absolutely stupendous views. The
walk finishes with a ramble through some of Swaledale's meadows.

The walk starts from the car park by Muker bridge,
SC9103097833.
Take the track out of Muker that is sign-posted "Footpath to Keld"
(this is not the path across the meadows, but more of a minor road that
heads up Kisdon Hill). Continue on the track until you reach a couple
of farmhouses, where the Pennine Way can now be found.
Follow the Pennine Way round the Eastern flank of Kisdon Hill until you
reach the point where the path descends at NY8992600743.
Follow the path down to Cattrake Force, and cross the Swale by the footbridge.
Once over the bridge, turn right along the track and take the path to
Crackpot Hall at NY9058500838.
From Crackpot Hall take the footpath to the top of Swinner Gill (there
is a lower footpath which isn't shown on the OS map; this path can be
a little bit difficult to navigate).
The path to Arn Gill Scar is found after crossing the small bridge at
the head of Swinner Gill, at NY9125501194.
Follow this path all the way until you descend to the metalled road at
SD9297598181.
Here, head along the road Westwards to Calvert Houses.
From Calvert Houses, follow the well marked footpath back to Muker.
