Outdoor Leisure Map No 31 - North Pennines, Teesdale and Weardale
This walk was made up from the
map. We left Middleton-on-Tees heading South along the Pennine Way,
then crossed Holwick Moor to eventually arrive at Low Force. The return
was along the Pennine Way from Low Force to Middleton.
The two sections of the Pennine Way give few problems with respect to
walking, - the path is mostly well-defined and not too arduous. As always,
it helps to use the map as you go along.
However, the section between the two legs of the Pennine Way could be
tricky in poor weather.
It is recommended that if the weather is at all poor, that you avoid
the footpath (which is totally unclear and requires use of a compass
and map), but take the farm track instead. This track is to the East
of the footpath.

(Overlay made with Version 4 of Memory Map)
The start of the walk is from the centre of Middleton-in-Tees,
NY9481225409.
Leave Middleton along the B6277 heading South, and at the T-junction about
1/4 mile down the road look for the Pennine Way footpath sign on your
right.
Follow the Pennine Way until you cross the small beck at NY9222922891,
then follow the footpath initially West and then North-North-West up to
Brown Dod at NY9091123894. THis path is not at all clear, and it is essential
to use your compass. Veer too much to the West and you are amongst the
shake holes and bogs.
From Brown Dod the footpath North is very clearly defined, all the way
to Holwick Scar.
Descend the scar with care.
From here, the remainder of the route to Low Force and back to Middleton-on-Tees
is easy to follow.
