5.55 miles.
Explorer Maps OL31, - North Pennines
This walk starts from the village of Romaldkirk, then follows
the Tees Railway Walkway to Cotherstone.
In Cotherstone head through the village then down to the riverside.
Initially follow the Teesdale Way footpath to Woden Croft, - a listed
18th century building where there are also holiday cottages.
Past Woden Croft the footpath leaves the Teesdale Way to head across fields
to return to Romaldkirk.
It is possible to continue on the Teesdale Way beside the river, but our
experience is that this is a very difficult footpath.
A map of the route followed
has been plotted on the Ordnance Survey mapping website, By selecting
the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances
and heights marked on the route.

The start of the walk is from the roadside by Cotherstone's
parish church (NZ01210 19334). There is very limited parking here, and
you may decide to find another convenient spot in the village.
Head up the road past the Rose and Crown and continue along the road in
the direction of Cotherstone.
On your right head up the road to Hunderthwaite. At the brow of the hill
the Tees Railway Walkway is on your left.
Follow the walkway for about 2 miles until you come to the minor road
on the outskirts of Cotherstone.
Here turn left into the village, past St. Cuthbert's Church.
When you reach the main road turn left and continue through the village,
until just past the Post Office a narrow lane takes you down to the riverside.
Cross the River Balder by the stone bridge, then continue along the Teesdale
Way, initially beside the river.
The footpath then climbs up and heads over fields to Woden Croft.
Past Woden Croft, turn left past a field gate to follow the field footpath
back to Romaldkirk.
At this point the footpath divides to follow the Teesdale Way beside the
River Tees to return you to Romalddkirk. Our experience is that this footpath
is difficult and potentially dangerous and it is not recommended.
