Explorer Map 308, - Durham & Sunderland

This is a relatively short walk (about 5miles) but the first part of the walk was found to be a bit tricky.
This was because the footpaths tended to be overgrown and muddy, with damaged stiles. Because of this use was made of roads in order to avoid further footpath problems.
From East Tanfield Station to Causey Arch, however, the footpath is clear and easy to follow.

A map of the route followed has been plotted on the Ordnance Survey mapping website, By selecting the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances and heights marked on the route.

The start of the walk is from the Causey Arch Picnic Area (NZ204 561), just off the A6076 Causey Road.
Leave the picnic area by the path under the railway bridge and cross the road. Take the footpath ahead over the field to a minor road. Turn left and at the Causey Old School (private house) take the Bridleway, Coppy Lane.
Follow this track to Coppy, and take the footpath on the right to Beamish Burn Road.
Turn left and walk along the road to Beamish Burn and continue to the track that is on your right to take you to the A6076 Causey Road.
Turn left and walk beside the road (there is a paved track) to the minor road to Tanfield.
Follow this road (again, there is a paved track beside the road) to East Tanfield Station.
Now take the track that takes you to Causey Arch and the picnic area.
