Explorer Map OLS26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

A very straightforward walk, which uses a farm track for most of the way. The walk takes you through the delightful scenery of Commondale, - an agricultural valley in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
There is a fairly steep hill to ascend / descend at the start of the walk, but otherwise there are no problems.
The route from castleton to Commondale village is direct and is followed on the return.
There is a loop over agricultural land (but no stile) from Commondale Village.

A map of the route followed has been plotted on the Ordnace Survey mapping website, By selecting the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances and heights marked on the route.

There are some steps by the Public Conveniences which lead to a footpath which takes you down the hill to the road junction by the bridge over the River Esk.
Cross the bridge and head for the railway station / railway bridge.
Continue up the hill beside the main road. There is a footpath beside the road.
At the top of the hill, on your left, is a signposted bridleway to Commondale.
Follow the track (which serves local farms) for about 1.5 miles until you come to Commondale Village.
At the road junction by the War Memorial, turn left. Walk up the hill for about 1/4 mile.
At NZ657 105 take the footpath on your left (this is not signposted).
Keeping the field wall on your right, continue until you come to a track / minor road.
At the end of this minor road, turn left and continue until you come to Foul Green, - which you passed through on the way out.
Now turn right and follow your footsteps back to Castleton.
