Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

The first half ot the walk starts out from Saltburn and heads up to Huntcliff and the Cleveland Way footpath.
Just before the Cleveland Way descends to Skinningrove, the route then heads to Brotton along what is basically a farm track.
Passing through Brotton, the route continue to the dene in which the Saltburn Gill flows.
Some of the paths in this section are very steep, although steps are provided to assist walkers.
In one section we also found the footpath to be very muddy and slippery.

Start from the esplanade above the Pier in Saltburn (NZ66520 21647).
Head down the steps to the base of the cliff and then walk towards the Ship Inn using the promenade by the sea front.
Just past the Ship Inn there is a) a set of steps leading to the Cleveland Way footpath, and b) a track ascending to the right of these steps.
Take the track which leads past some cottages and heads past Ladgates Farm.
A bit further on footpaths intersect at a "cross roads". Here turn left and head for Huntcliff. Now turn right and follow the clear and well defined Cleveland Way footpath to the point where it descends to Skinningrove and Cattersty Sands.
However, instead of descending to Skinningrove, turn right and take the footpath to Brotton.
The footpath passes Gripps Farm and ascends into woodland before meeting the road from Brotton to Carlin How.
Here turn right and follow the road to the cross-roads, where you take the left hand road fir a short distance.
Follow the footpath through Brotton Cemetery and continue ahead past a playing field to emerge at the Brotton-Skelton road.
Turn left and follow the road until you come to a footpath on your right at the point where there is a bend in the road.
This footpath leads you to the dene though which the Saltburn Gill flows.
Continue through the dene to return to Saltburn and your start point.
