Explorer Map OLS26, - North York Moors (Western Areas)

An ideal walk for any time of the year. Although the described walk was made in damp and misty conditions, it was still enjoyable. Far better, though, to do the walk on a clear Summer's day, to enjoy the views that much more.
The start and finish of the walk involves a moderately steep ascent / descent, as does the section entering Skinningrove.
Navigation is very straightforward.
One note of caution;-
Sections of the footpath pass quite close to the edge of the sea cliffs. Several lives have been lost in recent years on Huntcliff,, and it is essential that you do not take any unnecessary risks by going closer to the edge of the cliff than you need to.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site, - just use QUO!!

Start from the esplanade above the Pier in Saltburn (NZ66520 21647).
Head down the steps to the base of the cliff and then walk towards the Ship Inn using the promenade by the sea front.
Just past the Ship Inn there is a) a set of steps leading to the Cleveland Way footpath, and b) a track ascending to the right of these steps.
Take the track which leads past some cottages and heads towards Brough House Farm. The track becomes a footpath which takes you to cross the railway line (taking minerals from the Boulby Potash mine).
After crossing the railway line, follow the waymarked footpath round Warsett Hill.
This footpath appears to head to a field gate. However, the gate is locked, and the correct crossing of the field boundary is to the left of the gate via a stile.
From here head across the field towards the railway line, and after crossing the line take the Cleveland Way footpath all the way to Skinningrove.
Descend via steps to Cattersty Sands, then walk into Skininngrove itself.
The return is up the steps from cattersty Sands, then follow the Cleveland Way footpath along the cliff edge all the way back to Saltburn.
Returning to Saltburn involves a fairly steep descent using steps above the Ship Inn.
