Outdoor Leisure Map OL27, - North Yorkshire Moors (East)

No map is needed for this walk, though it is always useful to have a map on hand to check on place names etc.
The walk is very easy, - simply following the Rail Trail from Grosmont to Goathland, and back.
The Rail Trail is level for much of the way, with a firm surface.
There is a moderate incline between Beck Hole and Goathland itself. Before the railway was re-routed to avoid this incline, a rope haulway transported wagons up and down.

A map of the route followed has been plotted on the Ordinance Survey mapping website, By selecting the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances and heights marked on the route.

OS Link

The route shown is on a standard map. To view the route on an Ordinance Survey map, select the icon in the lower right of the screen. If the route is displayed on a 1:50 OS map, zoom in to see the details on a 1:25 OS map.
There is also the option to view the route in a satellite image.

Park at the pay-and-display car park that is found on the left just before entering Grosmont (NZ826 053).
There is a pedestrian footbridge that takes you onto the platform of Grosmont Station.
At the end of the platform, cross the railway lines using the level crossing. On your right the start of the Rail Trail is clearly signposted.
Follow the Rail Trail uphill past St. Nicholas' Church. Then descend with the loco sheds on your left, again on the clearly indicated Rail Trail.
Follow the main trail all the way to Goathland.
Return the way you came out.
