Explorer Maps Nos OL30, - Yorkshire Dales Northern & Central Areas

A walk suitable for just about anybody, - using mostly well sign-posted footpaths.
There are no gradients to worry about, and navigation is very straightforward.
The walker is rewarded with some superb views of Penhill in particular and Wensleydale in general. As you approach Redmire, there is also a highly rewarding view of Bolton Castle.
this is a walk that can be thoroughly recommended for just about any time of year.
HOWEVER, following heavy rainfall the River Ure can flood and cover the footpath between Wensley Bridge and Lords Bridge. If this is the case then the alternative is to take the track from Wensley to Bolton Hall.

Start from the centre of Leyburn (we use a small car park opposite the Polic Station), - SE11112 90624.
Take the road towards Wensley village, passing the Bolton Arms Hotel. Head downhill for about 200 yards, and on your left there is a footpath sign leading you across fields in the direction of Wensley. This footpath is waymarked, but at one point you come to a stone wall where you have to turn sharp left and continue for about 100 yards.
The footpath enters Wensley village, where you continue along the road past the parish church.
Here, turn left along the road and cross the River Ure by the road bridge.
Immediately on your right is a footpath that follows the river bank to bring you to Lords Bridge (where you have a fine view of Bolton Hall).
Cross the river at this bridge, and immediately take the footpath on your left that takes you to West Wood. This footpath is NOT well sign posted, and it helps to use the 1 : 25000 map at this point.
Continue along the track through West Wood, leaving at the gated exit for the footpath to Redmire.
In Redmire, head North along the main street.
At the top of the village, where the road bends right, there is a footpath that takes you across a couple of fields in the direction of Redmire Station. Turn right on the road, but do NOT continue under the railway bridge, Instead, take the track that leads to Jonas Place, - a holiday camp.
From here, there is a footpath that takes you beside the railway line, then over the line and across fields, in the direction of Preston-under-Scar.
When you reach the road, follow the road until you come to a footpath sign directing you to the village.
Head East along Preston-under-Scar's main street. Leaving the village, take the footpath to Gillfield Wood.
From here, there is a well-marked field footpath that takes you to the Leyburn Shawl, which you follow East all the way back to Leyburn.
