In the churchyard of St. Mary's, Old Malton, is this remarkable insight into practices of 300 years ago. This is a "Coffin Rest", where the parish coffin was kept. A body to be buried was placed into the parish coffin, transported to the grave in the coffin, and then after burial the coffin was returned to this place.
