Explorer Map 306, - Middlesbrough and Hartlepool

A linear walk that follows the final section of the Teesdale Way (which starts in Dufton and ends inj Redcar (Coatham)).
The walk starts from a Nature Reserve, but then continues through a heavily industrialised landscape. The majority of the route that is followed is along a footpath beside a railway line. In sections this footpath is decidedly grim.
The section of the walk from Teesaurus Park in Middlesbrough to the Tees Barage is beside the River Tees, and can be quite rewarding visually.
Navigation is basically very straightforward, and the walk is on a totally flat surface.

Start from the parking area by the Coatham Marshes Nature Reserve (NZ58542 25024).
Head across the Nature Reserve to aim for a pedestrian footbridge that crosses the railway line (NZ582 246).
Once over this bridge, turn right and than after about 50 yards turn left along the track that takes you to the main road (the A1085). Head Westwards on the pavement beside the road, past Steel House and the traffic roundabout, to cross Lord McGowan Bridge.
On the other side of this bridge the footpath descends beside a railway track and various pipelines. The footpath continues beside pipelines and the railway track in a South Westerly direction to eventually reach South Bank Railway Station.
Continue on the path beside the railway track for just over one mile to emerge by the Navigation Inn (a Public House).
Here turn right to cross the railway tracks at a level crossing, then turn left to follow the road to the Riverside Stadium.
Past the stadium, turn right and cross the lock. Walk past the Temenos sculpture, and head for Vulcan Street.
Walk down Vulcan Street, Depot Road, and Riverside Park Road.
When you reach Teesaurus Park, turn right into the park and continue to the footpath beside the river.
Follow this footpath to the Newport Bridge.
Continue on the footpath to the Tees Barage.
(The official Teesdale Way follows the river on the other bank, - e.g. cross the Newport Bridge.)
