10.93 miles

Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

A walk that starts and finishes in Saltburn.
The outward leg of the walk is through the valley that runs beside the Saltburn Gill.
From here the footpath takes you to North Skelton and then onwards to Slapewath.
There is a steep ascent out of Slapewath, and a couple of smaller ascents / descents into small valleys in which the becks flow.
Apart from these minor difficulties, and some very muddy paths when the weather is wet, the route is very straightforward.
The walk can be shortened by about 4 miles by taking the track from North Skelton to Skelton Green.

Start from the esplanade above the Pier in Saltburn (NZ66520 21647).
Head down the steps to the base of the cliff and then walk towards the car park that serves the Valley Gardens.
On the other side of this car park you will find the footpath that runs beside the Saltburn Gill. The footpath continues in a Southerly direction beside the Gill and then through the Nature Reserve of Bennison Banks. After emerging from the woodland, the footpath takes you to the South West of Brotton village.
Here the footpath then turns West and crosses the A174 road (CARE needed).
On the other side of the A174, a footpath sign directs you through dense undergrowth continuing Westwards. However, the path taken by other people runs parallel to this path, on the bank above (and beside a factory complex).
Past the factories, the path becomes a track which switches direction to the South East, and continues to bring you out onto the road near North Skelton.
Continue through North Skelton village, and at the bend in the road (at "Sparrow Park") take the track on your left.
This takes you to the Lingdale-Skelton road. Cross the road and take the footpath towards Boosbeck.
Where this footpath meets the Boosbeck Road, cross over and take first the track and then the footpath all the way to Slapewath.
In Slapewath, past the Fox and Hounds pub, take the Cleveland Way footpath (shown by a finger post) to Skelton Green.
In Skelton Green, cross over the road to take the track to Skelton.
Follow the Cleveland Way signposts in Skelton to take you back to Saltburn, in the valley of the Skelton Beck.
