Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors (East Area)

A there-and-back linear walk using well marked and easy to follow footpaths. There are some superb views to be had, so best to choose a day with good visibility to walk this route.
There are one or two gradients which require a bit of effort, but nothing too severe.
Although the paths are mostly in good condition, there were some muddy sections which might present a problem in wet weather.
But all-in-all this is an enjoyable walk, with plenty to look at and to to take in.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site, - just use QUO!!

Start from the car park by Grosmont station, operated bythe North York Moors Park Authority (fee payable).
Walk along the road to the bridge over the River Esk. After crossing the bridge, turn right at the road junction and follow the VERY narrow road for a short distance.
Where the road bends sharp left, continue along the farm track to Grosmont Farm and Fotherley's Farm.
At Fotherley's Farm, the bridleway enters woodland and follows an ancient paved highway.
Follow the Esk Valley Walkway to Newbiggin Hall Farm, past Hecks Wood, and onward to Back Wood.
In Back Wood the footpath crosses a small beck by a footbridge, although a waymark for the Esk Valley Walk shows the route to go directly across the beck. Unless you want wet boots, best to use the footbridge!
Follow waymarks and finger posts to Thistle Grove Farm and onwards to Sleights.
When you emerge at the main A169 main road, cross the road and continue for a short distance down the B1410 road.
On your right is a footbridge over the River Esk which leads to Sleights railway station.
Leave the station and head down the lane immediately opposite.
At the entrance to the cricket ground, take the footpath along the side of the ground, then turn right up the road past housing. Turn right uo the lane that is opposite the entrance to Northdale House.
Follow the field footpaths to Hagg House Fram.
At the footpath "cross-roads" at Hagg House Farm, turn left and follow the footpath to Ruswarp.

To return to Grosmont, retrace your steps.
